Set within the broad overall framework of the transnationalisation of trade union practises, this article discusses the issue of the regional integration of trade unionism. Even though there are still many obstacles to transnational co-operation between unions, it is being stimulated by the appearance of economic blocks. The author formulates three sets of questions about the regional integration of trade unionism with a view to defining the issue of both the integration of the Portuguese trade union movement within the European Union and that of its Brazilian counterpart within Mercosul. He also proposes five points around which to compare Portuguese and Brazilian trade unionism.
